The Lighthouse School, which caters to children with special educational needs, (SEN) is seeking additional aid from the general public for its school trip to Disney World. According to Deputy Principal, Olga Gourzon, the school wants to do something special for its students and a trip to Disney World is very appealing to them.

"This is an opportunity that the children would not otherwise get, due to their social background," Mrs Gourzon said.

According to the school's officials, they need to raise at least $30,000, but funds are slow in coming.

"We have sent letters to various businesses but the response has not been very good," Mrs Gourzon sadly stated.

A total of 80 people, including 25 students, teachers and parents are expected to go on this trip.

The school has been doing its best too to try and raise the funds needed itself.

"We have organised a number of fundraising activities such as our garage sale, raffle sheets, concert and we also sold drinks during Pirates Week," Mrs Gourzon said.

On Saturday the school had its fundraising "Caribbean breakfast".

At 7:00 am, Lighthouse staff members were up treating the public to a delicious combination of codfish and ackee, fried fish, fritters, callaloo, green bananas, fried plantain, porridge and juice, at only $5 and $8.

The Rotaract Club has also been playing its part in assisting the school and raised over CI$1,200 towards the Lighthouse School walkathon.

Members of the Club joined in the walk-a-thon on Saturday, which began at 6:30 am at Grand Habour and concluded at Smith Cove.

This special trip is scheduled for the Easter Holidays in April next year and the Lighthouse School would appreciate it very much if everyone could make a contribution and make this trip become a reality so that the students can feel special.
